MADDER SCULPTURE, 2021-22
This sculptural work represents a collaboration between the artist and madder plants grown inside the studio. Madder is a strong dye plant that holds pigment under ground, in its roots. The plant must mature for at least 2 years before harvesting, but produces long runners above ground that cling and climb and make for a living sculptural material.
Through a process of educated improvisations, the artist has created a mobile environment for the plant to grow within, encouraging the plant to reach its full potential with material dyed using that same plant. Special attention was paid to the un-see-able roots with a madder-dyed planter cover and local wool to warm and protect. Other materials include osage-stained scrap wood, hand-spun wool dyed with madder, locally harvested bamboo, hazel bark, and borrowed castor wheels.
